Bantu Knot Out Gone In.. Suhhh-weet!

As you will be able to tell from the video, I fought with my hair and the idea of whether or not I liked the results. As of today 2 days later, I am pleased.

If you have any questions as to how I did something or want more details, ask away My Dear!

All in all, this served as a reminder, that along with being a naturalista comes individuality and being able to work around the kinks and bumps in the road (or scalp)... waka waka waka! You make it work!

Day 2

Day 3

Have you ever bantu knotted? Do you have any tricks to make it work?

You want HOW much for a fake flower arrangement?! Child please......

So I was browsing in one of my favorite stores with cute & original items to decorate your home and saw these cute floral arrangements that I really wanted to help spruce up my night stand. So I came across these...

I liked them... they were great focal points for what I was going for but I was really sold with this baby

Absolutely in love with the fact that they're white to give it that pure & comfortable feel. And then there was the price... $25(ish) NEXT!!!

This is where my pep speech came in, something along the lines of: "There is no way I'm spending that much on a fake flower arrangement. Granted it would last for a very long time but I can make my own for half of the price... **ECHO** "I can make my own for half of the price". So that's just what I did.

First stop Goodwill:
I kid you not, I paid $1 for this vase. Peeled the sticker and washed it out a few times.

Next and final stop Walmart:
The biggest part? Flowers of course! I didn't quite want roses but something slightly less formal & to match my bed spread as well as my personality a little more. Don't ask me what kind these are either, I want to say Carnations but I really don't think so lol Price: $3 and I grabbed 2 bunches.

I needed something to serve as a filler with the stems being so long as well as the vase kind of tall. I stumbled across these for $3.

Steps:
1. The fillers were immediately placed into the vase.
2. The stems were slightly longer than I cared for them to be so I used wire cutters and snipped them to a well liked length and stuck into the vase. I had to shift them around some so the stems were not seen.
3. I used white ribbon that I had lying around, enough to make into a bow. Then I used a hot glue gun to keep the ribbon in place on the vase. Pow pow!

I absofreakinlutely adore it! It's sitting on my night stand keeping my great great Aunt's mirror company along with my Yankee Candle in "Pink Blush"

Prices:
Vase from Goodwill: $1
Bunch of unknown flowers from Walmart: $3 x 2 = $6
Clear filler from Walmart: $3
The other items I already had so expenses aren't calculated giving me a grand total of $10 -vs- $25? I'll take it!

Do you have any self made flower arrangements? Do share! Besos

Spring Grass & Corpal Skies.. + Mango Tango Review

We have been having some gawgeous (yet humid) weather but some amazing sunsets to make up for it. Which is where I got my inspiration for "Spring grass & Corpal (Coral & Purple) Skies", kind of like....

The beautiful Andy Warhol Sunset.

Check out my video for a how to on this look

Products used on eyes:
NYX Eye Shadow Base in Skin Tone purchased at Ulta
Fusion of Color's Mango Tango eye shadow (Given to me from my swag bag from The Experience NYC) Loveee this!!! The camera & lighting really didn't do it justice!
From Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box: Fishnet & Graffiti purchased at Sephora
Sephora Smoky Cream Liner in Must Have purchased at Sephora
NYX Glitter Mania in in Gold purchased at Ulta
Buxom Lash Mascara also available at Sephora but given to me as a gift from my Baby Mama lol

Lips:
Mac Lipgelee.. In anonymous color, unknown wish I knew but one of my faves & if I ever run out of it. I shall cry. Must find a dupe ASAP.

Cheeks:
KLS Mojave Rose

Mango Tango by Fusion of Color: Simply and sweetly put, I love this. I know that I had a lot of lighting in the video so it kind of blocked some of it's true essence but trust me when I say, I want more!!! I received this as apart of my Swag Bag from The Experience NYC as mentioned.

I wore this color for a few hours and it did not fade, it had great pay off and was not grainy at all. I can also see why it was The Color of the Year in 2012. Gorg!

Don't Zzzzz... on Wet N' Wild!

I have had these Wet N' Wild Matte Mega Lipsticks and Megalast nail polishes for quite some time now and I have been meaning to review them. Short story shorter... I'm sorry because these are amazing!! They retail for $1.99 at drugstores and $1.97 at my local Walmart.

I purchased 2 lipsticks at a drugstore on sale for $.99 when they first released & loved them so much that the very next day I was back with 3 nail polishes and 5 more lipsticks as well. A great thing about the drugstores is that the products are more likely to go on sale and there are coupons currently circulating making them f-r-e-e..

The swatches in light

(In order from left to right)
918D- Cherry Bomb, 970- Purty Persimmon, 903C- Just Peachy, 902C- Bare It All, 907C- Mauve Outta Here, 905 D- Smokin' Hot Pink, 917B- Cinnamon Spice

The swatches without light
(I hope you appreciate this my arm looked abused for 2 days lol)

I absofreakinlutely love the nail polishes! Not only do they last long as mentioned in the name but the brush is awesome. It is shaped to basically adhere to your nail so you are less likely to make errors with it's flat and rounded shape.

One of my faves Cherry Bomb

If you have tried any of these products, what do you think about them and what are your fave colors? Do share!

Initial Dr. Miracle Curl Care Review

So as mentioned in the previous post, one of the sponsors for The Experience NYC was Dr. Miracle with their new Curl Care line. I received a full sized bottle of the Nourishing Conditioner and sample sizes of a few other products. This is just my honest opinion on some of the products that I was given. Although I did not pay for these products, in no way shape or form was I paid to review or rate any of the products in Dr. Miracle's Curl Care line. This was done at my own leisure. (Yes believe it or not I said leisure).

Dr. Miracle’s Curl Care line is a “Unique natural complex, with honey and vitamins, helps hold curls for up to 12 hours”

For my opinion on the Nourishing Conditioner check out the video:

**To be true to the review, I did not apply any other products as I usually would with my regular regimen.**

All of the products in The Dr. Miracle Curl Care line appear to be Sulfate & Paraben free as well as sodium and phthalate! :-)

Phthalates are often used in many products and often in cosmetics to help make fragrances last longer. Although they are said to be safe and break down over the period of hours to days, according The FDA there is no clear phthalate effect on health but it is likely to be low on humans and not necessarily on animals.

So I became curious, I searched the bottle as well as the website and saw nothing about testing on animals. I asked the question and I’m waiting for the response.

I looked up the Dr. Miracle line and the Nourishing conditioner alone costs $9.49 per bottle. Wow.. Thanks again for the generosity!

Dr. Miracle Curl Care Soft Hold Creme (Retail Price of entire product $9.49 for 12 oz): Package states: “Infused with aloe to soften and improve elasticity as it keeps your curls in place”. To be used on wet hair and not rinsed out. Use this creme to individually define and hold curls. Perfect for styling two-strand twists or other natural styles.

  • It is very creamy, not thick at all
  • No drastic smell, not much a smell at all really
  • My hair did feel pretty soft once I applied it to my hair & MOISTURIZED. Suhhh-weet!

Dr. Miracle Curl Care Frizz Control Serum (Retail Price of entire product $8.99 for 4 oz): Package states that it has vitamins including vitamin A and Olive oil to fight tough humidity and frizz and and curl shrinkage while it smoothes and adds shine. This can be used on wet or dry hair but use sparingly.

  • I used sparingly by applying in sections and evenly distributing.
  • My hair was damp when I applied it in case you were wondering. Due to the thickness of my hair, I used the entire sample pack on my hair.
  • I honestly like this stuff!! It’s not too thick at all, very consistent and my hair felt very soft and moisturized. I really love the way my hair felt after this step. Honestly!

Dr. Miracle Curl Care Weightless Moisturizing Crème (Retail Price of entire product $8.99 for 8 oz):  Package states that it has coconut & vitamin E to nourish and soften. It is described to be infused with Jojoba and Proteins, this leave-in conditioner detangles hair into soft, bouncy curls, helping to add definition to your curls.

  • This was much thicker than the other products sampled but moisture is what it claimed to do and definitely what I was looking for I think it’s safe to say mission accomplished. I absolutely had to use the entire package on this thickness.
  • My curls definitely bounced a little after so I dig!
  • It smells medicated like a cherry cough drop lol seriously but it’s not bad and usually those are the best types of products for your hair anyway. Overall I approve!

Dr. Miracle products can be purchased online at drmiracles.com or you can find them at your local beauty supply store, Sally’s, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid, and Duane Reade.

Hair Rules NYC with Tank Daddy & Host Taren Guy

Tank Daddehhhh...

Long story short, great night! I arrived solo & met some great people! This was my first time going to the salon which was nice & the staff was very laid back and cool. Shout out to Dickey, The Hair Rules Salon, Taren Guy & The Atlantic Records crew, & Tank Daddy!

There were drinks, appetizers galore, great mingling sessions, eye lash applications (check the pics), A sweet serenading session from Tank himself (he's hilarious & foine Honey), and the night ended with gifts for everyoneeee! Kudos to Hair Rules & Tank who I thought was playing Santa but I wasn't about to sit on his lap telling him everything I wanted just to wind up at the prayer line on Sunday morning repenting something major. smh My lands.. No Ma'am! He did ask what my emergency was and all I could think about was all of the advice friends and family gave to me about behaving myself and I'm proud to say mission accomplished My Loves.

Tank performed a few faves & newbies including "Next Breath", "Slowly", "Please Don't Go" Maybe I Deserve", "I Can't Make You Love Me" to name a few.. Less than three his voice. Would I be selfish to keep the footage to myself? Eh. Okay okay editing the video now.

A few Blooper Pics

Surprised much?

Nothing fancy... Just my Flat Iron. Flatten my Tresses Babeh.

I have been meaning to do this post for a while now, smh sorry. I've tried many flat irons as a naturalista and if you have been there, you know that there aren't too many that will successfully do the job in one swipe. This one was a life saver while I was transitioning! The young lady who used to do my sew ins put me onto it & I've been hooked ever since! Blah Blah Blah... What's the name & how much right? Brace yourself...

Thyche Black for only $19.99 But wait wait!!! If you act now, it will come with a mini flat iron as well for free ANNNND a trail size Heat protectant Spray.. Seriously folks. I paid $20 for it and you can find it at several hair stores (in my hood anyway lol). It works WONDERS for $20, you can't beat it. I tossed my old flat irons to the side some costing up to $100.

How it looks in the package opened

The larger flat iron. I gave the smaller one to my Mom who has shorter hair and absolutely adores it!

Believe it or not, as short as my hair looks there once straightened, it had length

My flat ironing method:
  • Moisturize with Bee's wax (I get mine from Sally's Beauty supply for dirt cheap like $3 and it has a great thick consistency) because as mentioned in my previous video, I can not use grease and expect lasting results.
  • Make sure hair is detangled & use fine toothed comb placed in front of the flat iron and swoop down ONCE. That's all it takes.

Check it out, if you've used it let me know your take on this sweet find. Or if not, which flat iron do you use? What really does it for you?

Just a small taste of what I was working with while my hair was straight & a random "Sweet Thing" session at the end lol ;-)

Besos!

1 year of Transitioning + 1 Year of Natural = Tada!

As you all may or may not know, I transitioned for a year and chopped off whatever was struggling to hold onto the ends (April 14 2011. I couldn't remember whether it was the 14th or the 15th!) and was completely natural for a year which brings me to where I am today. I wanted to share a few pictures of my journey. This is surely just the beginning, there's NO going back to that creamy crack ova hurr!

Enjoy My Loves.
HUGE PS- The song played in the intro is by Xavier Kemp (Wassup X?!) apart of Xoul Musik Productions and the song is also a Xoul Musik banger by none other than Phenix ft Whitney Lucky with "Aftermath". Def check out his dope spoken word album "Yahweh's Paintbrush"!!! You owe it to yourself!

Bun Baby Bun Baby Baby Bun Bunnn..

Normally, my hair is huge right? I can't help it, I adore big hair but sometimes natural or not, you just don't feel like putting much effort into a style post washing! Sooo.. Me being my lazy self, I re-discovered the simplicity in "The Bun". Chic with a few simple sweeps. Big head & all, I managed. It made me realize how much I can't wait for wash & go's this summer but because it isn't exactly wash & go weather yet, I maintained. What do you think?

Yup, she was on the phone Boo Lovin
(Not too many can make that smile appear lol)

Yeah yeah yeah, I have a big head. I'm aware but my bun was looking real sleek-ish.

Sheesh, it looks like I have nothing better to do than take pics of myself huh? lol Not the case!

The bun is one of the simplest, cleanest hair styles which you can work with no matter what the occasion is. Here is to The Bun!.. And laziness.

Current Daily Reg(I)men

Everyone uses different products, has different washing methods, clip their ends differently, use this vitamin to help promote hair growth, etc. This has to be the question most frequently asked though..

"What do you use in your hair? Like how do you get it like that?"

I will be sure to keep you posted with what I use & no longer use but here's to it all..

Shampoo
  • Silk Elements Mixed Silk Gentle Cleansing Shampoo:

I love this because it's not heavy at all. I don't worry about too many suds, it's very affordable & guess what? It gets my hair clean! The smell honestly could be slightly better. IMO it kind of smells like the free sample shampoo's you would get from the HOJO on family vacations back in 1989 but it's just the shampoo so I get over it. It has a floral scent but it's not overbearing especially since I'm going to use conditioner next. If you want a Shampoo that will last as well, I would highly recommend this shampoo.

Where it can be purchased: I personally purchase mine from Sally's Beauty Supply. The regular price is is about $7.99 with a Sally's Card $7.19 however, the entire Mixed Silk line constantly goes on sale. I usually purchase them when they go on sale for 2/$10 and in addition to that, I also received a free gel as well during this past promotion. (Review on the Mixed Silk Curly Gel coming soon as well as the Mixed Silk Nourishing Deep Conditioner. Some swear by the deep conditioner, which I also picked up so let's see how this goes).

Conditioner:

  • Herbal Essence Hello Hydration:

Now I know what some of you may thinking, nothing about this screams natural homegirl, but it works! They didn’t name it hello hydration for nothing! When I tell you this keeps my hair very moisturized and gets my curls all extra curl-i-fied. Love it! It smells very good as most Herbal Essence Products do, very tropical & you kind of escape for a sec with your eyes closed kind of like the original HE commercials (but not that extreme, with the moans etc. That is OD extreme) It just makes you feel good about your hair & def hydrates your hair & keeps it that way. The conditioner is blue which is slightly weird as it washes out blue but obviously it doesn’t stain or anything. Just get it, natural or not. Point, blank period.

Where it can be purchased: Anywhere. Walmart, Target, drugstores, grocery stores, wherever they sell hair and beauty products. I usually purchase mine wherever they are on sale and look out for coupons as well (Hello…) The 12 oz can cost you as little as  $2 and some change & the 23.7 fl ounce under $5. Great steal loves!

  • Aussie Moist Conditioner:

Surprise Surprise, yes another non-natural product conditioner. Moisture! So important when it comes to keeping natural hair healthy & so much easier to manage. Another steal that smells so amazing, with a semi thick consistency.

Where it can be purchased: Just like the Hello Hydration you can pick this up anywhere your lovely heart desires. Also very affordable and check for those sales My Dear! These fly off of the shelves.

  • Cantu Shea Butter-Leave  in Conditioning Repair Cream:

Yall!! I have been using this since the very beginning of
My transition and deciding that I wanted to go natural. Pure crack! I love it, a little definitely goes a long way and I use it with just about E-V-E-R-Y wash.. I find that my hair is less likely to be frizzy, it is conditioning for my hair anyway & I’m less likely to have breakage when I use this product. It smells delicious with a slight hint of shea butter leaving a nice shine to your hair as well & it’s thick but not too thick at all. Honestly this jar lasts me for months because as previously mentioned, you don’t need a lot.

Where it can be purchased: I see this at just about every major store as well but I purchase mine at Walgreens for about $5 usually when they go on sale for BOGO, awesome deal. I’ll do my best to keep you all informed when they go on sale.

Moisturizers & Oils:

  • Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie:

I have been using this product ever since it first released about a year ago at Walgreens and I remember because I purchased it when my homegirls and I took a road trip to ATL they were BOGO at the moment. Ever since, I am addicted!

I have read & seen reviews but I think that people have it all wrong. With the words curl enhancing in the title, they assume that they are going to put the product in and bam, curls will magically appear. No, no, & NO! Enhance means to improve and for me, this product does all that it says it would which is hydrate, strengthens the hair, and definitely adds shine. This is meant for thick & curly hair which I so have so if you ever try it & it’s sitting around send it right on over this way and I will be more than happy to see to it that your money doesn’t go to waste. I use it for twist outs, adding moisture, sealing my ends or keeping them moisturized, you name it Doll, I do it.

Where it can be purchased: Shea Moisure products are purchased online of course, at Target to name a few but I purchase mine at Walgreens when they have the BOGO sale. In that case, I get 2/$10 unless I run out then I suck it up and pay the $10 for one. Love it that much, but you better believe I hold onto the receipt in hopes of the BOGO sale coming up within the next 30 days, yes Ma’am! lol

  • Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Strengthening Elixir:

I purchased this over a year ago and was not impressed in the beginning but I recently picked it back up again & love it. I have a difficult time keeping my scalp moisturized so when I do twist outs, Bantu knot outs etc. I spray this on my scalp before I release my do & massage it in. It feels niiiiiice… It also can be used to add mega shine to your hair and keep it moisturized as well as sealed. This is not a heavy oil at all. Some of the highlighted ingredients include sea kelp, argan oil, and shea butter, love them. The smell is different but I’m assuming the sea kelp is behind that but it is not a bad smell. Also you don’t need a lot, remember it is an oil.

Where it can be purchased: Online, Target, but guess where I get mine… Walgreens. Duh.

Gel:

  • Eco Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel:

This is a crowd favorite. I love it because it does not really flake in fact it’s the most moisturizing gel that I have ever used. I tried the Argan oil & I feel that it made my curls pop a little more –vs- the olive oil but the argan also flaked some, which I am not fond of. No flake & moisturized for $500 please. It has an excellent hold and does not smell bad, there is a light fragrance that you don’t really smell once dry anyway.

Where it can be purchased: Many drugstores sell this but I purchase my huge jar (32 FL oz lasting for months) from Sally’s Beauty Supply. Regular price $4.79 but with my Sally card $4.29 unless I find it on sale, which I constantly look for. This product is such a staple as it spruces up just about any bad or good hair style that I have going on. I have a small jar that I keep in my car as well purchased from CVS usually for $2 and some. It’s that good.

If you have ever tried any of these products or currently use them, know a secret with using them, give me feedback! I’m interested in hearing your takes on them or suggest (INEXPENSIVE) staple products. I hope this helps as I receive this question often in regards to what I use & I will keep you all up to date, Girl Scouts Honor. Much Love & Blessings Dudes & Dudettes. xoxo
